When a cold surface like a camera lens or camera LCD screen is exposed to warmer, humid air, condensation can form. During the winter time, this often means that your camera and lens will end up covered in condensation when you bring it inside out of the cold winter weather or stick it under your warm jacket. Even weather resistant cameras like the Sony A7C II, Nikon Z6 II, Fuji X-T5, and Canon EOS R6 Mark II are still susceptible to condensation forming on them – the weather resistant seals just help prevent any of the moisture that collects on the outside of the camera from entering the camera body and damaging the circuitry.

To avoid condensation forming on your camera, put your camera inside your zippered camera bag or inside of a sealed plastic bag and let it slowly adjust to the ambient temperature inside before removing it. It’s a good idea to wait at least half an hour to help prevent condensation from forming. If you need to upload photos, make sure to eject the memory card in your camera before you seal the camera in a bag! To prevent condensation from forming on the memory card, you can stick it in a small resealable bag – it shouldn’t take as long to warm up to room temperature as your camera gear.
