New Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens

New Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM LensCanon has just announced a new EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens, priced at a surprisingly reasonable $299. While Canon has been producing a EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens for several years, that lens has an MSRP of $649, still cheaper than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II lens, but more than many crop-sensor camera owners are interested in spending on a wide angle zoom. With Canon’s 10-22mm EF-S lens priced out of reach of many entry-level photographers, Sigma was able to do very well with the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 lens, priced nearly $100 cheaper.

Canon has fired back with this new EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which is 38% lighter and 22% smaller than the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens and photographers using APS-C size sensor bodies like the Canon 70D, Canon 7D, EOS Rebel T5i, EOS Rebel SL1, and many more will finally be able to take advantage of an ultra-wide angle lens for a very low price. On these crop-sensor bodies, the 10-18mm lens will effectively become a 16-28.8mm lens, and while f/4.5-5.6 is not especially fast, the inclusion of Optical Image Stabilization will mean that the shutter speed can be reduced by up to 4 steps.
