Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Ultra Wide-Angle LensCanon has just announced a new EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM Ultra Wide-Angle lens. This L series lens makes use of optical image stabilization, providing up to four stops of correction, essentially allowing this lens to be used in similar lighting conditions as the more expensive Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens. While the f/2.8 L lens has the obvious advantage when photographing quickly moving subjects in low light, for many photographers who use wide angle lenses like this to shoot landscapes, a cheaper, stabilized f/4 version will meet their needs perfectly.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Ultra Wide-Angle LensThe Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens features three Glass-Molded aspheric lens elements which help to correct aberrations. Two UD lens elements reduce chromatic aberration from edge to edge and a flourine lens coating on the front and rear lens surfaces repel dust and minimize ghosting.

Perhaps the most exciting new feature of the 16-35mm f/4L is the inclusion of an Optical Image Stabilizer, which can provide correction for up to four shutter speed steps. An intelligent CPU in the lens automatically chooses the ideal image stabilization mode, recognizing the difference between handheld shots and panning.

While the 16-35mm range is nothing new for Canon, the lower price point and Optical Image Stabilization should make this a tempting lens for photographers who want to add an L lens to their bag without breaking the bank.
